Brownfield Site Purchased by Barratt Homes

In an effort to drastically increase Chepstow’s housing stock, Barratt Homes have purchased the largest brownfield development site in Monmouthshire.

The 45-acre site located between the town centre and the River Wye, has outline permission for up to 450 new homes, with Barrratt anticipated to build 345 properties.

Locally named the ‘former Fairfield-Mabey factory’, the site from 1965 to 2009 was the Fairfield-Mabey factory, and part of Fairfields Shipbuilding and Engineering Company from 1924 to 1965.

Property consultancy Savills managed the deal. A director in the development team, Gareth Carter, said:

“The site presented many challenges, including the removal of industrial buildings. In addition, site access was only possible via a tunnel below the main railway line, and with over a kilometre of frontage to the River Wye, there were some sensitive ecological issues to address.”

Barratt Homes regional managing director, Steve Williams, said:

“We will now be working closely with the local council on detailed plans for the site… at the present time we plan to begin remediation work in the spring with construction due to begin in the summer.”
