An application to redevelop the derelict Northallerton Prison into a retail and leisure complex has been submitted with Hambleton District Council.

Planning and listed building consent is being perused by the Central Northallerton Development Company (CNDC) for the £17 million heritage-led project.

The development, known as Treadmills, that could create up to 200 jobs, will look to turn the site’s previous 5 listed prison buildings into;

  • Shops,
  • cafés,
  • restaurants,
  • a cinema,
  • apartments,
  • offices,
  • car parking
  • a civic square,
  • a performance space.

CNDC’s planning application say the scheme will;

“redevelop a vacant local landmark and deliver a mix of uses, to the benefit of the local community and economy”.

2 public consultations saw 65% of people in support of the scheme, and 15% against it.
