Green belt school campus proposals are supported by Cheshire council

It has been decided by the planning committee that Macclesfield’s Kings School does indeed meet the “very special circumstances” that are needed for green belt developments.

The strategic planning board for Cheshire East Council have attentively granted permission for Kings School to develop on a green belt site to build a brand new campus.

This site will be in a village named Prestbury, roughly 1.9 miles to the north Macclesfield. Macclesfield’s Kings School’s already existing campuses was also permitted for 450 new homes.

The scheme needed the casting vote of the committee chairman, there for Sajid Javid, The Communities Secretary, will now have the decision of whether he should intervene or not.

Initially it has been suggested by the officers that the proposed development should be refused to it not applying to the “very special circumstances” that a development on a green belt need. Nevertheless, an increase in the package of contributions, as well as an improved affordable housing package, it was suggested that members approve the project.

The conclusion to the report to the committee is below:

“Whilst the proposals remain finely balanced, in the light of the additional information and community benefit to be provided by the housing developments it is considered that the benefits of the proposals in the round outweigh the automatic harm to the openness of the green belt by reason of inappropriateness, and very special circumstances exist to outweigh the harm. The proposal will allow for two key housing sites to be developed in line with the aims and objectives of the emerging local plan and the school will retain its historic ties with Macclesfield without having to relocate further…the scheme is socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.”
