At Loughborough University, a high-tech sports training centre has been approved by Charnwood Borough Council.
The permission was obtained by the real estate adviser GVA for the university in Leicestershire.
The Elite Athletics Centre, which is planned to be five-stories, is going to be situated next to the Paula Radcliffe Athletics Stadium, towards the eastern end of the university campus, and is anticipated to provide a wide range of training facilities.
Included in the scheme will be:
- rest and relaxation areas,
- a nutrition lounge,
- a café,
- onsite accommodation (44 bedrooms and 20 altitude rooms).
It is anticipated that Team GB Olympians and Paralympians will use the Elite Athletics Centre to train for the 2020 Olympic Games.
Tim Evans, of GVA’s planning, development and regeneration team, had the following to say:
“The delivery of the EAC will represent another significant step forward for the university, ensuring that the campus offers the very best training opportunities across as broad and diverse an array of sporting disciplines as possible.”
