Illegal Barking Extension

Following the illegal extension to his property in Barking, without planning permission, a man has been fined £15,000.

Back in 2005, Laurence Hill applied for planning permission to build a first-floor rear extension to his property, which was refused by the council, and the Planning Inspectorate dismissed his subsequent appeal.

Despite this, 9 years later in 2014, planning enforcement officers discovered Hill had proceeded with the extension, and in February 2015, he was issued with an enforcement notice, stating the extension must be removed by June 2016.

A Decline in Planning Application

A 4% decline in planning applications between July and September 2019 has been seen compared to the same quarter in 2018, with District-level planning authorities receiving 106,500 applications.

Of these 106,500 applications, the statistics released by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) show that 90,600 decisions were granted, which is around 88%, with 87% of the larger applications being decided within 13 weeks, or the agreed time

Dorset’s 600-Home Plan

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council have received a plan submission from land promotion specialists, Richborough Estates, encompassing 600 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable.

The 600 new dwellings, which will array from one-bed apartments to five-bed detached homes, as well as a 62-bed care home will be constructed on a 113-acre housing site between Wimborne and Poole.

Bristol’s Mixed-Use Plan Submitted

Sussex’s First IKEA

The wait may soon be over for Sussex’s first IKEA superstore.

Following the New Monks Farm site in Lancing being granted planning permission in October 2018, with councillors voting 5-3 in favour of the plans, work could be started before 2020.

The development is anticipated to include:

  • Over 600 homes,
  • The provision of a country park,
  • The relocation of the Withy Patch Gypsy and travellers’ site,
  • A new roundabout to replace the Sussex Pad junction on the A27,

‘Plastic-Free’ Homes

Endeavouring to cut the sheer volume of plastic used during construction, Accord Housing Association has committed to building ‘virtually plastic-free’ housing.

12 dwellings are anticipated to be built, using substitutes to fit kitchens, bathrooms & windows and lessening the amount of plastic used in building materials.

It is mentioned, that the building sector is accountable for over 60% of the resource use in Europe.

Additionally, the housing construction sector is responsible for 30% to 50% of material use.

The Government’s Housing Goal Will Not Be Met

It has been suggested that the government’s goal of delivering 300,000 homes per year will not be met using the current process for calculating housing need.

Presented in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) last year, the planning consultancy Lichfields had evaluated how the ‘standard method’ would meet the governments targets, through calculating the minimum number of dwellings each council should plan for.

To achieve the goal of 300,000 homes a year, the government needs to deliver more than the minimum, as this will deliver only 273,000 homes.

Wildlife Is to Be Better Protected by Developers

Developers have been informed by James Brokenshire, the Housing Secretary, that they need to be doing more to protect the British wildlife.

Using systems like hedgehog highways, hollow swift bricks, and creating drainage areas to create wetlands for bird and amphibians, the government has set out new guidelines explaining how developers should be protecting certain British species.

Developers should be taking into consideration the long-term impact their developments will have on ecosystems, both throughout and post construction, says the government.

40,000 Dwellings Fulfilled by Homes England

In the time between April 2018 and March 2019, 40,289 dwellings have been completed by the government’s housing accelerator, Homes England.

Throughout the same period, 45,692 homes were started on site under programmes managed by Homes England.

These are the highest levels of completions in 4 years, and the highest levels of starts in 9 years, per the organisation.

Outline Plans Supported by South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Planning Committee

Outline plans to develop the earlier Waterbeach Barracks site has received support from South Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee.

The councils newly adopted local plan, has designated the western half of the site for a new town.

Included in the Urban&Civic plans are:

  • Up to 4550 new homes,
  • 1,950 affordable homes,
  • Upgrades to road, cycle and public transport,
  • Community facilities,
  • A secondary school,
  • Three primary schools,
  • Seven hectares of allotment, community orchard space and parks.
